SAP Tops €10 Billion in a Quarter as Cloud Backlog Climbs 28% on AI Push
SAP posted its first €10 billion quarter, raised its cloud outlook and credited its Autonomous Enterprise AI strategy. The results show ERP cloud migration accelerating, but SAP still reports no numbers for its AI business.

Key takeaways
- A record quarter. Revenue rose 13% to €10.27 billion and cloud revenue grew 26%, helped partly by one-time catch-up effects.
- Backlog keeps building. Current cloud backlog rose 28% to €24.1 billion, though SAP expects growth to slow slightly.
- AI is the pitch, not yet a metric. SAP gave no AI revenue, Joule usage or agent figures, and cloud gross margin dipped to 74.3%.
- Ask for proof of impact. Buyers should tie SAP's AI claims to specific processes changed and measured results.
SAP passed €10 billion in quarterly revenue for the first time, reporting on October 21 that third-quarter revenue rose 13% and its current cloud backlog climbed 28% to €24.1 billion. The company raised its cloud outlook and credited its "Autonomous Enterprise" AI strategy. For enterprise leaders, the results show that ERP migrations to the cloud are still accelerating, and that SAP is betting its AI future on the data inside those systems. They also show that SAP is not yet reporting how much of the growth comes from AI.
What did SAP report for the third quarter?
According to SAP's quarterly statement, filed with the SEC, total revenue reached €10.27 billion, up 13%, or 12% at constant currencies. Cloud revenue grew 26% to €6.67 billion. SAP said part of that gain came from quarter-specific effects, mainly catch-up revenue from customers returning from financial distress. Revenue from its Cloud ERP Suite rose 29% to €5.92 billion.
Current cloud backlog, which tracks contracted cloud revenue due over the next 12 months, rose 28% to €24.14 billion, or 26% at constant currencies. IFRS operating profit grew 18% to €2.93 billion.
SAP now expects cloud revenue near the top of its €25.8 billion to €26.2 billion range at constant currencies, and cloud and software revenue near the top of its €36.3 billion to €36.8 billion range. Profit and free cash flow targets were unchanged, and SAP said it expects backlog growth to slow slightly. Cloud growth beat expectations, according to Bloomberg reporting cited by FourWeekMBA.
How is SAP using AI to sell cloud ERP?
Chief Executive Christian Klein framed the quarter around AI. "Our Autonomous Enterprise strategy is not just resonating, it is being adopted," he said in the statement. SAP pointed to Joule Work and Joule Assistants, shown at its SAP Connect event on October 6, and to a string of deals that strengthen its Business Data Cloud: the acquisitions of Reltio for master data and Dremio for lakehouse technology, the July purchase of Prior Labs, which builds foundation models for tabular data, and an agreement to buy TechWolf, an AI workforce intelligence platform.
Taken together, the deals suggest SAP wants its agents to work on clean, connected business data managed inside its own cloud. Klein also said customers see Joule Work as strengthening the business case for their transformations, according to Tech Insider.
What is SAP not telling customers about AI?
The statement gives no numbers for AI. There is no revenue figure for Business AI, no Joule usage data and no count of agents in production. Tech Insider noted that SAP has not disclosed what share of deals include AI.
There is also a cost question. SAP's cloud gross margin slipped to 74.3% from 75.1% a year earlier, FourWeekMBA reported, and SAP does not break out what running AI inside its applications costs. FourWeekMBA also noted a tension in the model: SAP's agents point toward charging for outcomes, while its backlog still measures subscriptions for access to software.
SAP is also applying AI to itself, with a target of more than €2 billion in efficiencies by the end of 2028, according to FourWeekMBA. Headcount still grew, to 113,076 full-time equivalents from 110,730 a year earlier, with 805 of those roles coming from acquisitions, the statement showed.
Why it matters for enterprise data and AI leaders
For SAP customers, the message is that the vendor's AI roadmap and its cloud migration push are now the same plan. The most capable agents will run on SAP's cloud, against data managed in Business Data Cloud. That can simplify AI for companies that run most of their operations on SAP. It also deepens dependence on one vendor for both records and the AI that acts on them.
AI Connect speakers have warned that adoption claims need proof. "Adoption without impact is activity," Kanchan Soman, VP of AI, Data and Analytics at Crum & Forster, said at The AI Enterprise Conference 2026, in a session we covered in Crum & Forster's lessons for scaling enterprise AI. Buyers should ask SAP for the same thing they ask of their own teams: which processes changed, and by how much.
Data meaning matters as much as data location. In a AI Connect panel on October 15, Shubham Trivedi, a Digital Solution Advisor at SAP, asked, "Would you trust an employee with no tribal knowledge to use data correctly from its description alone?" His answer was that agents need definitions, units and relationships built in, as we reported in our story on building a single source of truth for agentic AI. Clean-core ERP projects are a chance to fix that at the source, a point Actian's Emma McGrattan made at COLLIDE 2026 in our piece on data products and data contracts.
The next things to watch are whether backlog growth holds into 2027 as SAP expects it to ease, and whether SAP starts publishing AI-specific metrics that let customers judge the Autonomous Enterprise pitch on results.
Frequently asked questions
What were SAP's Q3 2026 results?
Revenue rose 13% to €10.27 billion, cloud revenue grew 26% to €6.67 billion, and current cloud backlog rose 28% to €24.14 billion. SAP raised its cloud outlook toward the top of its range.
What is SAP's Autonomous Enterprise strategy?
It is SAP's AI plan built around Joule agents and assistants working on business data in its Business Data Cloud, which it is expanding with acquisitions such as Reltio and Dremio.
Does SAP report AI revenue?
No. Its Q3 statement included no AI revenue, Joule usage or agent counts, so the AI contribution to growth cannot be measured from its disclosures.
